In short: Math Fluency Assessment is a student assessment tool. The assessment itself collects only usage and performance data — not directly identifying information. Student accounts are created by schools and districts, who act as the consenting party under COPPA and direct our use of student records under FERPA. We never sell student information or use it for advertising.
Math Fluency Assessment (“MFA,” the “Service”) is operated by EdTech Games, LLC (“EdTech Games,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a Utah limited liability company. This Privacy Policy explains the types of information we collect through our website at mathfluencyassessment.org and our assessment application at app.mathfluencyassessment.org (together, the “Service”), how we use and share it, how we protect it, and the choices available to you.
By using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service. This policy works alongside our Terms of Use.

Many users of Math Fluency Assessment are young children. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) protects children under the age of 13. School officials and teachers are authorized under COPPA to provide consent on behalf of parents; therefore, EdTech Games does not obtain parental consent directly. A teacher or school or district official provides consent for a child under the age of 13 to use the Service when they create an account for that child.
Outside of the school context, the Service is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from a child under 13 without appropriate school or parental consent. If we learn that we have collected such information without the required consent, we will delete it. For more information about COPPA, you may visit the FTC’s Children’s Privacy resources.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) provides parameters for what is permissible when sharing student information. In providing the Service to an educational agency or institution, EdTech Games acts as a “school official” / contractor with a legitimate educational interest, as described under FERPA (34 CFR 99.31(a)(1)(i)(B)). We are under the direct control of the agency or institution with respect to the use and maintenance of education records, including the agency’s ability to dictate the level of data collected. We do not re-disclose education records to other parties except as permitted by the school or district and 34 CFR 99.33.
This data has significant educational value: beyond enabling student accounts, it allows teachers to measure fluency growth, compare instructional approaches, and identify students who need intervention. This information is used only for educational purposes.
The assessment itself does not collect directly identifying information. It collects only usage and performance information — for example, the math facts presented, response times, accuracy, fluency levels, time spent, and progress through the Service. This performance data is associated with a stable, de-identified student identifier rather than a name.
When a school or district creates a student account, certain student information is typically provided or rostered, some of which is personally identifiable information (PII). The fields typically used to create a student account include:
As students use the Service, additional data is generated, including assessment results, fluency levels, response times, and usage. Where a school or district participates in a research study, and only under a written data agreement, this may be joined with district-supplied measures (such as end-of-grade scores) and de-identified covariates — see Research and de-identified data.
We collect some personal information about teachers and administrators when a school or district creates accounts. This data potentially includes first and last name, email address, and school or district name, along with usage of the reporting dashboard (such as login activity).
When you visit our website, we may collect personal information you choose to provide — for example, if you register interest, request information, or contact us by form, phone, or email. This may include your name, email address, telephone number, and your school or organization.
We may also collect certain information by automated means, such as cookies and similar technologies, and we may use third-party analytics tools to understand site traffic. This may include the IP address and type of device you use, your browser and operating system, the dates, times, and duration of your visits, and the actions you take on the site (such as pages viewed and navigation patterns). A “cookie” is a small text file a website stores on your device to recognize your browser or remember settings.
We use the information we collect to:
We do not sell student personal information, and we do not use or disclose student information to target advertising.
We may disclose aggregated or de-identified information without restriction. We do not otherwise share personal information except as described here:
Math Fluency Assessment shares a single account and sign-on system with our companion service, EdTech Games. Authentication is handled centrally. When an account is created or used, account and authentication information is shared between the two services so that a single login works across both. Both services are operated by EdTech Games, LLC and handle information consistently with this Privacy Policy.
We retain de-identified data (data from which personally identifiable information has been removed) to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the Service. We may also share de-identified data with independent academic research partners conducting efficacy research, and only under a written agreement that restricts use to that research and prohibits re-identification. Any public reports, evaluations, or publications resulting from this work contain no individual student identifying information. Where research involves a school or district, it is conducted under the agreements and permissions established with that school or district.
We retain personal information for as long as needed to provide the Service and for the purposes described in this policy. All PII provided to EdTech Games will be destroyed upon termination of our relationship with the school or district, or when it is no longer needed for the purpose for which it was provided.
We follow recognized best practices for secure data destruction, including destroying data within a defined period after termination of a relationship with a school or district, using sanitization methods designed to protect against data recovery, and securely destroying any non-electronic media that may contain PII.
We take our data stewardship responsibilities seriously and use a range of safeguards to protect information from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access or alteration, including:
To achieve comprehensive protection of student information, schools and districts should also use secure practices. Please note that no method of electronic transmission or storage is entirely secure, and we cannot guarantee that our safeguards will never be defeated or fail.
EdTech Games acknowledges the right of parents and legal guardians under FERPA to review education records pertaining to their children. Upon request, and after verifying identity, we will provide access within 45 days. Because student accounts are managed by schools and districts, we recommend that parents first contact their child’s school, which controls the relevant records. To review, correct, or delete information you have provided directly to us, please contact us.
The Service may contain links to websites operated by third parties. We are not responsible for the content, security, or privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policy and terms of any website you visit.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The date of the most recent revision appears at the top of this page. If we make a material change to how we handle student personal information, we will provide notice consistent with our obligations. Your continued use of the Service after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
